Team First Book-Matagorda County

Who We Are

Our Mission: Giving children in need the opportunity to read and own their first new books.

First Book is a national 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization with local impact that provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors effecting literacy – access to books. We provide an ongoing supply of new books to children participating in community-based mentoring, tutoring, and family literacy programs.

What We Do

Mission: Team First Book Matagorda County gives children of low-income families in Matagorda County the opportunity to read and own their own brand new, high-quality and age appropriate books and so build home libraries. Having a home library leads to success in school, which leads to an educated workforce and economic prosperity. Our ultimate goal is to eliminate the single greatest barrier to literacy, access to books, and thus end illiteracy in Matagorda County,

History: Team First Book Matagorda was founded in 2003 as a local affiliate of the national First Book organization. Our close relationship with that office allows us to provide books to kids at an average cost of $3.00 per book (that is a 20% increase from 2016). We are a 100% volunteer Team, with no operating costs and no administrative expenses. 100% of all funds raised are returned to proven literacy programs in Matagorda County. These funds are only used to purchase new, high quality books for children. The books are selected by program leaders to meet the needs of specific children. All books are given to the children to take home and keep. During our 13 year history, Team First Book-Matagorda County has placed more than 90,000 books into the homes of needy children in Matagorda County.  In 2010, we began a much more aggressive community outreach and began to add new book recipient programs, initiate new programs with new and existing partners, and take an active role in community events.  We currently provide books to every school district and library in the county. Additionally, because we are able to provide free brand new books, we have been able to sponsor new programs such as book clubs in Palacios and Tidehaven Junior High and  Tidehaven High School (clubs that were formed only because of the offer of books from Team First Book) a Books for Babies program (in conjunction with Palacios Community Hub, Women’s Pregnancy Center and MEHOP) that provides new books and parenting information to newborns all over the county, and a Parent’s as Teacher program (with Palacios Community Hub and PISD) that helps prepare low income preschoolers for entrance into school. Since 2010, in addition to providing book grants to existing, proven literacy-infusion programs (schools, libraries, pre-schools and after-school programs, etc.,) we have also provided thousands of books to children at a variety of community based events ranging from holiday gift giving, to parades, parent trainings, community read-alongs, and storytelling activities.

Our Goal for 2017: Reaching Our Goal: Pre K-3 and Beyond

This year will complete the implementation of a 4 year initiative begun in 2014 and designed to  give every Matagorda County child Grades Pre-Kindergarten- 3 at least 2 brand new books to take home and build home libraries. Achieving our mission involves on-going support of our partner programs throughout the county and reaching out to children in programs and classrooms we are not yet serving.

This is actually a jigsaw puzzle of inter-related programs and like a puzzle makes sense only when all pieces are in place:

Reaching Our Goal: Pre K-3 and Beyond is comprised of the following:

•             Books for Early Readers (Prek-3 and Head Start)

•             Beyond Third Grade/School Wide Support

•             County Wide Library Support (Beat the Summer Slide)

•             After School Programs

•             Early Childhood/Family Literacy Programs

•             Community Giving Events
